Sailing on the IJsselmeer

The IJsselmeer is bordered by the provinces of North Holland, Flevoland, and Friesland. On the south side, the Houtribdijk (also Markerwaarddijk) separates the largest lake in the Netherlands from the Markermeer. On the north side, the Afsluitdijk protects the former Zuiderzee from the forces of the Wadden Sea.

The fascinating history behind this is explored at the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center. The harbor towns along the IJsselmeer enchant with charming townscapes, lovingly restored buildings, and Dutch flair. They also tell important chapters of Dutch history. After all, people here primarily lived from seafaring in the past.

Around the IJsselmeer are the ports of Urk, Lemmer, Stavoren, Makkum, Medemblik, and Enkhuizen. The latter is the departure harbor for many of Holland Sail’s sailing ships. It’s worth taking some time before or after your sailing trip to visit the Zuiderzee Museum.

If you sail towards the Afsluitdijk, the Nederlands Stoommachinemuseum (Dutch Steam Engine Museum) in Medemblik has everything running on steam. Further north, you can visit an exhibition of old Viking treasures in Wieringen. The beautiful nature of the IJsselmeer can be experienced in a special way from the water. It’s home to many birds. On the uninhabited island of De Kreupel, around 150 different bird species meet each year. Holland Sail offers sailing trips for birdwatching enthusiasts in spring and autumn, specifically designed for bird watching. The IJsselmeer also hosts sailing regattas, including the Klipperrace, which starts in Enkhuizen.
